The Franklin Lakes Education Foundation (FLEF) is a community non-profit 501(c)(3)
It is the mission of the FLEF to raise funds to help to enrich educational opportunities for the students of all 4 Franklin Lakes Public Schools that might not otherwise be provided. We are able to do this by funding grants that enrich the experience of EVERY STUDENT with "outside the box" ideas and other opportunities.
Our Grant Nights consists of teachers and administrators making formal presentations to our board to request funds for "outside the box" teaching and other opportunities.
This grant process is the foundation of our organization and why we work so hard to raise money throughout the year.
Below IS AN Impressive sample of some grants that HAVE BEEN awarded. A special thanks to all the teachers and administrators that go above and beyond to request funds to enhance and enrich their students lives.
The Franklin Lakes Middle School science department proposed a grant to build a school garden. The objective was to create a place where students can get outside and get a little dirty to see nature at work. It helped students try new things, help feed those in need, learn about nutrition, and see the circle of life and needs of living things in action. The old adage stands true. IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME!
The garden grew! With the help of the grant last year, we were able to hire a garden expert who helped show the students how and where to plant the seeds in the beds, how to take care of them, and how to protect them from animals in the area. As a result, we had swiss chard, kale, arugula, beets, mustard greens, and mint to name a few that were planted last year and harvested this year. This year’s 7th graders had the benefit of harvesting the vegetables and cooking them up. Some of them had never tasted some of these greens, while others showed off their cooking skills.
The second and third grade students at CRS, HMR, and WAS are currently hard at work coding their robots to dance, play basketball, and even speak in foreign languages!
The funding from FLEF has led to countless smiles, high fives, and powerful learning experiences for the 216 children who are benefiting from the Dash robot grant in this year alone. It has been a joy to watch the students create amazing coding algorithms with skill and enthusiasm.
